Tree Felling Safely: When to Call a Professional

Most trees on a Garden Route plot come down without drama. But some don’t, and the difference between a clean fell and a crushed roof or a hospital visit usually comes down to one decision: knowing when to stop and call someone who does this daily. Here’s how to judge it.

When You Can Probably Handle It Yourself

A small tree — say under 4 metres, with a clean trunk and nothing around it — is manageable with a sharp saw, a proper escape route and common sense. Dead alien saplings, young wattle regrowth and bush clumps are routine plot clearing work. Even here, wear eye and ear protection, and never work alone with a chainsaw.

When to Call a Professional

  • Height over 5 metres. Once a tree is taller than a double-storey building, fall direction becomes unpredictable and the consequences of a mistake get serious.
  • Anything near buildings, fences or power lines. If the tree leans toward your house, a neighbour’s boundary or an Eskom line, this is not a DIY job. Directional felling and sectional dismantling are skills, not luck.
  • Leaning or hollow trees. A tree with a visible lean, cracks, fungal growth or a hollow base can barber-chair or split on the cut. Pros read these signs before the first cut.
  • Dead or storm-damaged trees. Dead wood is brittle. Limbs drop without warning, and after heavy Garden Route rain and wind, hung-up branches are a real danger.
  • Big stumps. Grinding a stump properly needs the right machine — otherwise you’re left with a regrowth problem and a trip hazard.
  • Protected or uncertain species. Some indigenous trees need permits before removal. Get that checked before anyone starts cutting.

Know Your Ground First

Before felling anything on a new plot, it pays to know what’s underground and where your boundaries actually sit. A professional land survey removes the guesswork — see capevegsurveys.com for surveys before clearing. It’s cheaper than rebuilding a retaining wall or settling a boundary dispute.

What Happens to the Wood

Good news for the braai: cleared trees don’t have to go to waste. Usable hardwood gets cut, split and seasoned into braai wood, and the rest becomes mulch or gets chipped. You clear the plot and stock up for winter at the same time. We’re also strict about fire safety — no burning on high-wind days, and all slash cleared away from structures.
