Hedges, Palms and Overgrown Gardens: Seasonal Maintenance on the Garden Route
By late summer, most gardens between Wilderness and Knysna are bursting at the seams. Hedges that were neat in spring have shot out, palms are dropping old fronds onto paths and roofs, and beds have disappeared under a tangle of growth. On the Garden Route our mild, wet climate means plants keep growing for most of the year, so “seasonal” maintenance here looks a little different from the rest of the country.

What Needs Doing This Season
- Hedges: Trim fynbos-friendly hedges, buxus and indigenous screens now so they hold their shape through winter. Cut back hard where they block light or security beams.
- Palms: Remove dead and dying fronds before they drop. Old seed pods and fronds are heavy, and on tall palms this is not a DIY job.
- Overgrown gardens: Clear out invasive growth, creepers climbing walls, and shrubs swallowing fences. If a plot has been neglected for years, this is really plot clearing rather than gardening.
- Beds and borders: Cut back perennials, clear leaf litter, and mulch to hold moisture and suppress weeds through the drier months.
- Fire safety: With winter fire risk in mind, keep a clear zone around the house. Remove dry palm fronds, dead branches and piled-up garden waste — they burn fast.
Don’t Just Hack — Check First
Before you clear a large overgrown plot, it pays to know what you are standing on. Old boundary lines, buried services, and protected vegetation can all cause problems later. If you are clearing land for building or development, arrange a professional survey first — we recommend the team at capevegsurveys.com to confirm boundaries and site features before any machinery moves in.
The Wood-Recycling Story
Here’s the part most people don’t think about: the wood we cut doesn’t have to go to the dump. Cleared alien trees, trimmed branches and felled timber get cut, split and seasoned into braai wood. Instead of paying to cart green waste away, many of our clients end up with a stack of dry wood ready for the braai — a small win for the pocket and the landfill.
