When to Clear Your Plot Before Fire Season
Fire season along the Garden Route runs roughly from November to April, and by the time the south-easter is pumping and the fynbos is tinder-dry, it’s too late to start clearing. If you own a plot in Wilderness, George, Knysna or Sedgefield, the work needs to happen in the cooler, wetter months — ideally late autumn through winter, and no later than early spring.

Here’s why timing matters, and what to do about it.
Why Late Autumn and Winter Are Best
- Ground is softer and holds moisture, so machines and crews do less damage and work faster.
- Vegetation is less flammable, so cutting and chipping on site is far safer.
- You have months of buffer before the first hot, windy days arrive.
- Cleared material has time to dry and be processed into braai wood instead of being dumped.
By September, you should be done. October onwards is catch-up work, and catch-up clearing is rushed and expensive.
What “Clearing” Should Actually Cover
- Removing alien invasive regrowth — wattle, rooikrans, Port Jackson — before it seeds again.
- Felling dead or leaning trees near buildings, fences and power lines.
- Stump removal so regrowth doesn’t return next season.
- Cutting back overgrown garden beds, hedges and long grass close to the house.
- Clearing firebreaks along boundaries and access tracks.
- Basic land prep — levelling, brush cutting, and clearing building footprints or driveways.
On plots with steep slopes or dense stands, we bring in tree work and stump grinding as part of the same job. One visit, one quote, done properly.
Know What’s Under the Ground First
Before any machine moves onto a plot, you need to know where the services run — water lines, septic tanks, electrical cables, old foundations. Cutting blind is how you turn a R6 000 clearing job into a R60 000 repair. If you’re not sure what’s on your erf, arrange a survey first. We recommend capevegsurveys.com for land and vegetation surveys across the Garden Route — it’s cheap insurance before clearing starts.
The Wood Doesn’t Have to Be Waste
Cleared alien wood — wattle especially — makes excellent braai wood once it’s cut, split and dried. Instead of burning piles on site or paying to haul it away, we can stack and season it for you. By the time fire season arrives, you’ve got a woodpile instead of a fire hazard.
