Overgrown stand? Here’s how to clear it for building
Bought a bush-covered plot in Wilderness, George or Knysna and want to build? The clearing work comes before the architect’s lines make sense on site. Here’s the practical order of events.
1. Know your boundaries first
Nothing wastes money like clearing the wrong strip. Get a professional land survey before any machine or chainsaw starts. A surveyor confirms pegs, corners and any servitudes running across the stand — and it’s often required for your building plans anyway. Sort the survey at capevegsurveys.com before you book a clearing team.
2. Walk the stand and mark what stays
Not everything must go. Mature indigenous trees add value and shade, and some may be protected. Walk the plot with your clearing crew and mark:
- Trees to keep (and those too close to the building footprint)
- Alien invasives — wattle, gum, pine — which go first
- Dumping spots, old fences and rubble
- Drainage lines and wet patches that affect levels
3. Clear in the right order
Brush and undergrowth come out first so you can actually see the ground. Then tree felling — direction-controlled, especially near boundaries or power lines. Stumps get removed or ground down, because you can’t compact or pour foundations over a rotting stump. Finally, land prep: level the building platform, shape drainage away from the house, and stockpile topsoil for later landscaping.
4. Fire safety is not optional
The Garden Route burns. If you’re clearing in summer, keep cut material off the ground in manageable stacks, never burn on a windy day, and check your local municipality’s fire regulations before any open fire. A cleared, maintained stand is also a far safer stand.
5. The wood doesn’t have to be waste
Good hardwood from your clearing can be cut, split and stacked as braai wood — either for your own use or sold locally. Chipped brush makes mulch; bigger logs become firewood. You cut disposal costs and get something back.
